But at what cost?
It should be freely part of our lives but support from the invaluable gifts of time and money will help enormously when it's under threat, as in current times...
The defend campaign will formally launch with a manifesto in spring 2026 though its urgent work has already started
defend needs you!
The defend campaign will throw everything in to the air that we think we know about our free world today. Defend will ask people to question whether or not the algorithm should be banned or regulated as one of the biggest misunderstood threats to free speech known today.

As a communications professional Jason Tanner currently operates on a freelance basis and gets paid for his skills and services, as appropriate.
He has enjoyed working for a variety of organisations and individuals that he both respects and that appeal to his personal values and interests, whether in the commercial, public or charity sectors. His own news and comment activities on here or originally published on Pulse (via Linkedin) are independent of this and are part of his volunteer advocacy to protect modern democracy and fairer free speech.

-The 'unpaid work'-
Jason Tanner is ALSO part of the UK's enormous, unique and dedicated volunteering army that ranges from litter pickers to child protection volunteers or unpaid Special Police Constables and environmental campaigners.
The vision is to grow a new campaign to protect and promote fairer free speech & democracy as suitable funding, grants, donations and volunteers can be found.
The history of many of the UK's established charities frequently starts with an idea led by ordinary people - volunteers. This was certainly the case for the National Trust which grew from the shared passions and concerns of its three volunteer founders.
Jason currently channels his own resources, time and earnings into a new campaign that he doesn't want skewed by conditional funding that might otherwise threaten its key purpose and independent integrity.
That's despite it being considered as a key pillar of democratic society.
Free Speech is under threat as it gets hijacked and adopted as a sub brand of platforms such as X, which consumers are being told are the only places where free speech can flourish. This is definitely a rather dark deception designed to tighten the grip on what information people consume and can spread, under the tools of the much hyped algorithms.
There are often repeated claims on X that it is now the #1 source for news and the only safe place for free speech to flourish. But it's a deception being played on unwitting consumers who haventhaven't realised they are being played.
They're led to believe that they are now being heard by typing their thoughts directly on to platforms such as X . but most actually end up talking to themselves or like-minded friends if they're lucky.
Jason says "The genesis of a future campaign came about in early 2025 when i switched on the radio one morning to learn that Elon Musk was in the thick of commenting on British child grooming gangs. Considering his background and known field of expertise, I felt this was a little odd. An initial sift through X's Tweets soon revealed that highly emotive issues such as child protection were being knitted together with other themes coinciding with Trump's MAGA agenda such as the deportation of illegal immigrants.
Comments on X tried to portray the largely Pakistani community where the scandal emerged as criminals and illegal immigrants. Further digging saw attempts to pin the poor response to such a crisis on British Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer. There was a sea of fake accusations and calls to replace him seemingly driven by coordinated X accounts trying to incite Britain into some sort of civil unrest to force change in the UK's elected governance.
Jason became consumed by what he was reading on X and started to feel he should add to the 'shouty noise' on this platform by rebuking certain posts in a guerilla-war-like way only to observe his ammunition kept on reducing its impact to that of a water pistol, and confined to his own personal echo chamber and a few algorithms for good measure. It didn't add up because his similar posts on a less well established account on Threads platform were showing a very different reach. He was experiencing algorithmic suppression. He also noticed an odd phenomenon that is still around at the start of2026. Any interaction that might appear to be happening was created by accounts seemingly related to Elon Musk in some way, whether his children, mother or his enterprises including Tesla. Any negative critiques received likes though these phantom accounts woud be full of more positive comments that these accounts retweet automatically but post nothing else of their own. This phenomenon still goes unexplained;
After a day or two of staring at aggressive posts on X it wasn't hard to spot template-style campaigns in the names of different 'mouthpieces' around the world who receive support, sometimes financial, from Musk and often using Trump-Musk themes of immigration, crime levels and threats to women safety and rape as interconnected themes to stir the pot in many countries.
There is quite stomach churning language and racist posts trying to antagonise and stir people against immigrants and Muslims. It was and still is, in my opinion, a very ugly arena and not a world that appeared to exist before Trump returned as President for a second time with MAGA soldiers and the owner of X at his side.
There's also been an extraordinary set of 'Elon mouthpiece' profiles blindly following what some termed the 'Elon Bandwagon' driven by the hysteria being whipped up on X and seemingly allowed to flourish without hindrance by Musk. In the UK, controversial characters such as Tommy Robinson started to look like 'puppet slaves' of Elon, backed financially. So called english patriots started to rally in London seemingly unaware they were likely and unwittingly being recruited to serve a much bigger agenda being masterminded by others.
Increasingly, immigrants were being blamed for all that is bad in the world as part of un-checked narratives. However, official figures start revealing the real story. ICounter to the narrative of many on X it transpires that white British men were the biggest group of offenders perpetrating terrible rape crimes, not immigrants as was and is peddled.
How can calling for the shut-down of legacy media and it's multiple sources of information benefit fairer free speech if you are then left with highly controlled algorithmic platforms such as X or Truth Social? You are having technology give you news rather than you selecting news that you would originally have the option to discover by scrolling an online newspaper, flicking through a newspaper or changing channels as you see fit,
People are being drugged by the impression they have a voice- but they don't because their voices won't be heard unless the algorithmic wind blows in their direction.
I'd like to empower volunteers and paid intern(s) to make their mark & gain real, practical experience with independent journalism, campaigns, lobbying and fundraising. Volunteers should ideally be paid expenses whenever possible in the early days but has £0 in the coffers having launched so rapidly.
£5 per day helps towards daily energy costs to run the campaign from free loaned space in my home
£15 supports a volunteer for a day towards their travel and lunch expenses for up to a day of their free time
£20 per month helps towards campaign mobile & communications costs
£50 per day could help fund a paid intern seeking job experience
£75 per day starts to secure extra time for the campaign director to be paid in addition to an estimated 14+ hours donated for free as a volunteer each week,
£100 helps towards funding a lobbying event targeted at MPs
£200 helps to provide a laptop for an intern or volunteer to use (when my own spare one inevitably malfunctions)
£500 pa towards maintaining and sourcing campaign contacts and a media database
£20,000pa funds the campaign's first dedicated Project Officer (pt) to work alongside volunteers to develop consistent, strategic development
£40,000pa establishes a small media & campaigns training programme or bursary offering legal and hands on practical campaigns and independent news story writing skills
£5 million for the establishment of an independent news & training campaign centre to protect Fairer Free Speech & Democracy
Jason Tanner published research on November 6th 2025 that saw X's Artificial Intelligence, Grok dramatically attack and criticise its own 'Master' Elon Musk, for failing to use technologies that can deal with the bots, but are deliberately left dormant as a calculated decision by Musk himself. This technology has existed since 2018.
Free Speech is its own worst enemy because in reality it's a false and mostly impossible dream. It rarely exists, if at all. Meanwhile X and Elon Musk are perverting the term to reposition themselves as the saviours and providers of Free Speech but they're not and the public need help to question and understand this.
The 'Elon bandwagon effect' illustrated below, represents the various narratives observed to destabilise the UK though similar narratives and template-like campaigns were detected and targeted at many other democracies from Ireland to Australia.
