Protecting free speech in an age of Google and political turmoil goes deeper than Lake Ontario or Lake America.
This statement from Defend is in development and has not been signed off or launched formally as yet. It does for the moment provides a guide on Defend's stance and direction regarding the definition and narrative around free speech. There is additional material being prepared but interested media are still welcome to get in contact. hello@defendUK.uk or 07941 433598 (version 02/06/26)
In recent times, there's been some stark attempts to shift and redefine our understanding of the ancient concept of free speech. It's evolution in to the 21st Century is being challenged strongly by vocal people in the USA including some key wealthy and therefore very powerful influencers. Its creating a global rift in previous tolerance of defining free speech. One nuance in defining free speech is being used to attack the interpretation of ree speech elsewhere.
This is something that internet search engines and the new generation of Artificial Intelligence operated by Google, X, Chat GPT (Microsoft) and the strongly emerging European alternatives such as Qwant will need to get their metaphorical 'heads around' if it is to present accurate results itself. But research currently underway confirms that AI is subject to editorial positioning and therefore bias in the same way that other media is, and always has been.
The rationale for preventing a newly emerging interpretation of free speech drowning out its historic and internationally adopted definitions is actually very clear and logical based on the fact that that the older understanding does not encourage a battle of the loudest or the wealthiest to ultimately get heard. The more recent interpretation based on the U.S Constitution and disproportionately asserted by a minority of poerful figures in the USA prevents the weakest and the poorest from being heard and goes against the origins of free speech, including the right to be heard when being tried.
Within the scope of its limited resources, Defend is now monitoring the ability of AI and search engines to work this out or at least acknowlede this very real, but significant chasm that's emerging. Some are very much hiding behind the American Constitution, which is illogical.
Defend and others mainly outside of the USA are starting to identify specific individuals such as President Donald Trump and his close 'communications' ally, Elon Musk as having sufficient sway to drive through this shift in perceptions on what a majority across the world believe free speech actually is.
This tension emerges from a different emphasis sometimes placed by such figures in the USA on how free speech is referenced in the American Constitution versus the development of Free Speech from the earlier English Bill of Rights of 1689 and the international development of free speech in terms of freedom of expression adopted by the United Nations (1948), to which the USA is a signatory, and mirrored by the the European Convention on Human Rights (signed 1950) and in the UK, Article 10 of the 1998 Human Rights Act.
Defend is also at pains to get the international community to question the wisdom of permitting the increasing significance of Elon Musk ownership of communications systems. In 2022, Elon Musk acquired Twitter the major social media communications platform X. Significantly he also owns Starlink, a major communications satellite internet constellation operated by SpaceX. It provides broadband Internet service in approximately 160 countries and territories. Starlink accounts for approximately 75% of all active maneuverable satellites in Earth orbit . Nations need to consider this U.S based monopoly very carefully and whether it is healthy not only on a global country-by-country basis but ultimately in the best interests of the American people themselves who also face potentially negative, un-checked implications from such an imbalance of control.
The defend Campaign for free speech
introduced the notion of fairness into the operation and therefore existing definitions and explanations of free speech in 2026. Depending on what Defend is communicating at anyone time, the campaign will often use an alternative strapline in its branding and messaging .
defend fairer free speech for democracy
Crucially, the marriage of free with fairness emphasises that organisations such as Amnesty and Defend believe there ARE natural and necessary limits to free speech; In Defend's narrative, these limits are met when hate speech is freely used unfairly as a weapon to silence the fair free speech of others. By definition, if all speech came under the banner of free speech, then free speech has the capabilty of destroying itself.
Defend has also introduced the fair | fairer concepts to be aware of the dangers of inaccuracy proliferating in deliberate attempts to pesent falsehoods, lies and fake information as truth.
In recent times, inaccurate claims by powerful and wealthy people have seen the rightful ownership of free speech 'by the people' being 'stolen' from the people using strategies that include the calculated misuse of other everyday words such as 'truth' & 'fake' to represent the opposite of their meaning. There are many documented examples of this including the highly inaccurate grouping of established media such as the large number of different TV and radio channels and newspaper titles under the sweeping and therefore wholly inaccurate label of 'legacy media' .
Defend identifies this as a clever but also a devious way for users of the term to suggest that newer electronic or social media such as X (formerly Twitter) or Donald Trump's 'Truth Social' are much better sources of news, truth and facts when there is no clear evidence to support this impression. Research shows there have been many posts on X without any sanction by Elon Musk or X that have promoted X as the 'the only source of news'.
Ironically many posts in both social media and established media (legacy media when used in a derogarory sense) raise many questions about the actual truth carried by these platforms and the overall editorial agenda of such platfirms is increasingly shown and now recorded by researchers to be controlled through algorithmic manipulation. This unregulated environment lacks the controls that society consensus asks the politicians it elects to enact through the rule of law. Without any regulation or boundaries then you expose a largely trusting and therefore vulnerable general public to unfiltered falsehoods and fake news.
